to drone or not to drone

I wanted to share this short film by Ben Sturgulewski of Sturge Film,  I believe it’s a great example as to why the use of unmanned aerial systems, or drones in filmmaking is not only here to stay, but absolutely should be a vital part of any serious filmmakers toolbox.

I am amazed at the quality of shots that can be captured with about $1000 worth of equipment...and keep in mind, just a few short years ago, it would have cost $2500 or more for one days rental of a helicopter, pilot and HD camera with a gyro mount to get the same quality of shots.  Plus, when you watch this film, take note of the many tight spaces that would be impossible for a helicopter to capture.

It's apparent that these unmanned aerial systems are here to stay, but what is also imminent is that our government will have a say in how and where they are used, and who can use them.  My only hope is that the final legislation allows filmmakers the autonomy to utilize this wonderful technology to create awe-inspiring art.
